Marthe Armitage is internationally celebrated for her distinctive wallpaper designs.

Marthe began by hand-printing wallpaper for her family home after graduating from Chelsea School of Art. She drew inspiration from botany and architecture, particularly the chestnut trees and angelica plants of her native Chiswick.

Marthe Armitage devoted time to raising her family, including two years spent in India, where she watched craftspeople in a bazaar print patterns onto fabric using simple wooden blocks—an experience that would later inspire her own linocut designs.

The acquisition of a 100-year-old, hand-operated offset lithographic press, which she adapted to her own specifications, enabled her to produce designs for others and marked the beginning of a printing career spanning more than 50 years.

Marthe Armitage is internationally celebrated for her distinctive wallpaper designs. She is a member and past Master of the Art Workers’ Guild, a position held by William Morris in 1892. Now in her 90s, Marthe remains as creative and innovative as ever.
